    Veterinary Technician Internship

    The veterinary technician internship program is a rotating internship for graduate veterinary technicians through the Veterinary Medical Center, Large Animal Hospital. It is designed to offer the technician the opportunity to increase knowledge and gain practical experience in an educational environment.

    Eligible candidates:
    Only graduates of AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology programs will be considered. The internship is aimed at new graduates, but experienced technicians may be considered.

    Application Process:
    Candidates are required to submit an application with letter of interest, a minimum of two letters of reference, and college transcripts through the last semester completed. Application packets from candidates are being accepted now until filled.

    Salary and Benefits:
    The veterinary technician interns will be paid at an hourly rate, consistent with a 40 hr./wk. schedule. However, additional duties may be required as part of the training program. Medical insurance is available to the intern, partially paid by the University. If space is available, interns may be offered a place to live in the dormitory area in the College of Veterinary Medicine for a nominal fee.

    Upon acceptance into the veterinary technician internship program, the technician will receive a letter confirming the acceptance. The letter will include the terms of the agreement. The candidate should send a letter accepting the offer and terms of the internship. The period of the internship will be approximately July 1, 2015 – June 30, 2016. Start and end dates have some flexibility.

    Evaluations will be completed after each rotation. The intern will be required to give a minimum of two presentations within the year. Feedback and evaluations will be provided on an ongoing basis.

    There will be core rotations, as well as elective rotations. The veterinary technician interns will be scheduled on overnight rotations, as well as weekends and holidays. Rotations will last from 1-4 weeks.

    Qualifications: Applicants must be a graduate of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology training program and obtain a license in Tennessee within one year of employment. Experience in the handling and management of large animals is required. Species worked with include: horses, cattle, small ruminants, pigs (primarily pet, not production) and camelids.     Duties: To provide veterinary technical care for medical, surgical, and nursing care for hospitalized and emergency service patients. To assist in the evaluation and treatment of emergency cases. This includes open communication, transferring of cases and finishing unfinished tasks or case responsibilities that the day service was either unable to complete or are ongoing at the shift change. This position will work evenings from 4:00 p.m. – 12:30 a.m., 5 nights per week.

    Salary: Commensurate with training and experience. Shift differential pay will be given for working evenings.
