The NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a Research Assistant in the Clinical Studies Core. A service core of the College’s Center for Comparative Medicine and Translational Research, the Clinical Studies Core provides support and resources to faculty members and research sponsors conducting veterinary clinical research. The Research Assistant will serve as a Clinical Studies Core Coordinator and be responsible for coordination, oversight, and initiation of clinical studies performed through and/or served by the Clinical Studies Core.
Duties include planning for and scheduling studies and study activities, publicizing studies and patient recruitment, collecting and processing samples, data entry and analysis, and communication with investigators, clients, referring veterinarians, hospital staff, and sponsor representatives. In addition, the position will serve as the clinical and hospital coordinator for the Clinical Studies Core Veterinary Biospecimen Repository. The Research Assistant will share responsibilities with other members of the Clinical Studies Core in sample processing, cataloging, and data management activities of the Clinical Studies Core Veterinary Biospecimen Repository. The position will assist the Director in the daily operations and business activities of the Clinical Studies Core unit.
Required education includes a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree, and a minimum of 1-2 years of veterinary clinical experience and/or research experience.
The applicant must have excellent communications skills, and skills related to writing and presenting of research and project information. The applicant should demonstrate skills and knowledge in the conduct of research, performing tests, procedures, and experiments according to the project demands and standard operating procedures. The incumbent should have skills in proper data management and quality control. The applicant should possess good organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a degree from an accredited veterinary technology program, and veterinary technician licensure or eligibility for licensure, within 1 year.

The Wake County Animal Center is a publicly owned and operated open admission animal shelter that receives all animals in Wake County. For fiscal year 2011, the Center will receive 17,000 animals, adopt 5,400 animals, transfer 2,000 animals to rescue groups, and return 1,400 animals to their owners. The Center is open to the general public seven days per week from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm, including a number of holidays during the year. The Center has a three-station animal surgical suite, and an animal treatment room that provides space for animal examinations, treatments, pre-surgery preparation, and post-surgery recovery. The Center will retain two veterinary technicians/assistants as independent contractors to support licensed veterinarians to perform high-volume spay/neuter surgeries, conduct health assessment examinations, prescribe and administer medical treatments, and perform other surgical services for illnesses and injuries. Wake County Government will provide all medications, equipment, materials and supplies necessary for the veterinary care required by animals owned by Wake County Government. The term of the agreement for the contract services will be for one year from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. No benefits are provided with these positions as the veterinary technicians/assistants will be retained as independent contractors of the County.
